Sony's PlayStation Showcase
Sony debuted their PlayStation Showcase Thursday and revealed an assortment of games and new content heading to PlayStation Five shortly. The first game shown off was a remake of an old Star Wars game called "Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic."
In 2011, it was a big hit MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), but over time its popularity dwindled. Now that a remake is coming to PS5, Star Wars fans and owners of the console will be able to give the game another shot in the spotlight.
The next game shown off in the presentation was "Project Eve," a hack and slash that is exclusively for PlayStation 5. Not much information is known about the game's story yet but based on the trailer, you play as a warrior named Eve who battles against alien monsters on a ruined Earth.
The combat appears astonishingly fast-paced and will keep you on your toes as you fight against these strange enemies. Due to its high-speed action and insane monster designs, Project Eve has been compared to two of the most critically acclaimed games in the hack and slash genre, Nier and Bayonetta. For those who enjoy these types of games, Project Eve is certainly one to keep an eye out for.
Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was the next game shown off in the showcase. It is a multiplayer shooter that will be releasing on all gaming platforms except for Nintendo Switch. The initial release date for the game is March 25, 2022. There is not much to say about this one, but the game seems like it will be a fun time if you have some friends to play with.
After Wonderlands, Forspoken was the next game revealed, and boy does it look incredible. In this game, you are a young girl who is transported to a mysterious dimension where she becomes a witch and gains magical abilities.
You get to battle dragons and all kinds of mystical creatures as you explore a vast world and unearth discoveries about the land. Traveling through the world looks fantastic because it appears you will have plenty of freedom in how you choose to explore. The initial release date is in Spring 2022.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction was the next game in the showcase. It is a multiplayer tactical shooter where players must team up and defeat a hostile alien species called the Archean. Based on Tom Clancy's 1998 novel with the same title, this is the latest in the Rainbow Six franchise. The game is set to release in January 2022.
Alan Wake, a survival horror game released in 2010, is getting a remaster for PlayStation Five. The game follows novelist Alan Wake who is on a journey to uncover the mystery of his wife's sudden disappearance while on their vacation together in Bright Falls, Washington.
During his search, Alan experiences events from the plot of his latest novel coming to life, but he does not remember ever writing them in the first place. Alan Wake will be releasing next month on October 5th.
An Uncharted remastered collection is coming to both PS5 and PC in 2022. The collection will include Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and it's DLC expansion Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
A remastered version of Grand Theft Auto Five and Grand Theft Auto Online is also coming out in March 2022. The games were scheduled to launch on November 11th this year but were instead delayed.
Ghostwire Tokyo is a new game coming to PlayStation Five. An occultist releases a slew of supernatural entities onto the streets of Tokyo and takes over the city.
Many of Tokyo's citizens begin disappearing due to these paranormal forces and it is up to you to save them all, including your family who is also among the people who vanished.
The gameplay is from a first-person perspective and you fight monsters by shooting and attacking with magic. Ghostwire Tokyo is slated for release in 2022, but it is subject to change.
Next came Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Rather than a long trailer that overstayed its welcome, we were treated to a short video that revealed more details about the story. The release date is scheduled for October 26, 2021.
The last three games of the showcase are some of the best out of the whole presentation. Marvel's Wolverine, Spider-Man 2, and God of War Ragnarök turned the tide of the showcase from pretty good to spectacular. To start, let us begin with Wolverine.
While there is not a whole lot to say about the trailer, the sheer fact that we are getting a Wolverine game is more than enough to be hyped about. Even better, critically acclaimed developer Insomniac Games will be behind the project so it is bound to be something phenomenal.
Also being developed by Insomniac Games is Spider-Man 2. It is known that their previous two Spider-man games are among the most accomplished superhero games in recent memory, so this should be no different.
The most exciting aspect of this entry is our first glimpse at Venom and perhaps even Kraven the Hunter. As Venom's presence has been building since Insomniac's first Spider-Man game, it feels great to finally see him.
The release year is 2023.
Last but not least is God of War Ragnarök, the sequel to 2018's Game of the Year God of War. In this sequel, we see Kratos and an older Atreus embarking on another adventure together, slaying monsters and continuing to bond as father and son.
Their greatest challenge is to defeat Thor, the God of Thunder, who has been sent by Odin to kill them. With combat looking as slick as ever, gorgeous graphics, and a massive world to explore, Ragnarök is shaping to become a worthy follow-up to God of War.
The game is set to release in 2022.
And that marks the end of the PlayStation Showcase! With so many amazing games in development, the PlayStation 5 is poised to be another hit console that many will enjoy for years to come.
